English artistic movement of the late 19th
century, dedicated to the doctrine `art for
art's sake' - that is, art as
self-sufficient, not needing to justify its
existence by serving any particular use.
Artists associated with the movement include
Beardsley and Whistler. The writer Oscar
Wilde was in his twenties an exemplary
aesthete. The idea of art for art's sake was
current in Europe throughout the 19th
century, but the English movement in the last
two decades tended to advocate extremes of
sensibility, which attracted much ridicule.
